getting there
The Bahamas is well served by flights from North America and Europe. Its proximity to Florida means regular inexpensive flights between Ft Lauderdale and Nassau, the country's capital. Most major US carriers service this route and flying time between the two is only 30 minutes. Some of the Exuma Cays have airstrips, including Staniel Cay (the main settlement of the Exuma Cays) and Great Exuma Island, both of which accept the landing of private planes. A boat from Bird Island will collect you from your port of entry and travel time from Nassau is approximately two hours.

food and water
Bird island has an underground freshwater reservoir for general use and rainwater is collected in a cistern and filtered for drinking purposes. Both hot and cold running water are in constant supply. Fresh, local food, including seasonal fish, fruit and vegetables, bread and milk, are brought in daily by boat from Staniel Cay. Other food supplies (including staples and special requests) are brought in weekly from Nassau. Fresh fish, lobster and conch are available in abundant supply directly off the island shores, and mango, coconut, banana and guava grow wildly on land. The resident chef will prepare and serve all meals in the Nightingale Pavilion at your request, or in the privacy of your own villa when arranged in advanced.

electricity
All villas on Bird Island are supplied with electricity, generated by a discreet solar energy system. The island is also fitted with a backup generator. Private telephone lines can be installed in the individual villas, and a main line can be accessed 24-hours a day in the Nightingale Pavilion.

medical
Basic medical supplies are housed in the Nightingale Pavilion. For more serious needs, a medical clinic is located on the neighbouring Staniel Cay, and there are hospitals in Nassau and George Town.

mail
Mail boats call twice weekly at Bird Island from Nassau, travelling down the Cays on Tuesdays and returning to Nassau on Thursdays and Saturdays. Special arrangements for collection/delivery can be made in the case of urgency.
